Dusty had taken her time getting as much wood as she could to the enclosed porch. It had been torture at breakfast to sit across from Morgan what with her adorably messy hair and the way she blew at her coffee to cool it down—those lips were driving her mad. When it had become too much for Dusty, she’d decided to channel her…energy into more productive pursuits.

“I got as much of the firewood as I could into the porch, and good thing—it is pouring out there now.” Dusty sat on the stone ledge of the fireplace to dry herself off.

“My God, you’re soaking wet.”

“I’m fine. I’ll just dry off here.”

“No, you won’t. Take your coat off and change your clothes. You’re going to get sick. You’re making me cold just looking at you.”

“Fine,” said Dusty as she removed her coat to dry it on the line over the wood stove in the kitchen. She removed her flannel top and added it to the line and pulled out the T-shirt that was tucked into her jeans. Unbuttoning her jeans, she headed to the table where Morgan was sitting and scooped up a handful of dried fruit to eat before heading up to the loft to change. “Did you make contact with the ranger? Hear anything about your family?”

“Yes, I made contact, but she said that she hasn’t heard anything back from them yet. She called last night, left a message and also sent them an email, but nothing so far. She said to radio again tomorrow morning. I thought you might like to know. She did get ahold of Tegs. She let her know that you’re alive, that you are with me. She said that Tegs sounded really worried about you and said to tell you that she has already updated your contract, though I don’t know why she would want to tell you that at a time like this.” Morgan sounded perplexed.

“Aww, too funny! Inside joke…kinda,” said Dusty. “Any news about the lodge, the workshop people?”

“Yes, she said that the cabins at Bear Creek were hit hard. They were built in the 1920s for logging and converted when the main lodge was built. Some of them weren’t really up to code for an earthquake. There’ve been two casualties among the workshop people, at least so far, one from a heart attack and the other from some poor woman who was crushed in her cabin. There are sure to be some lawsuits. Maybe lawyers will come to the rescue this time.” She chuckled, remembering the joke Dusty had told in her class.

“Oh, that’s horrible,” said Dusty as she descended from the loft clad in her long-sleeve thermal shirt and Uncle Mike’s oversized sweatpants. She made her way to the fireplace and sat as close to the fire as possible. She was shivering, but warming up. She looked up, catching Morgan’s brief glance at her body, and wondered again how much longer they would be able to hold out.

“But aside
